FORT WALTON BEACH — Tobacco Free Florida in Okaloosa County is collaborating with the Okaloosa County School Board to review its tobacco policy. The goal is to protect students, faculty, staff and visitors from exposure to tobacco products, including emerging nicotine delivery devices.
The program seeks to raise awareness about free and effective tobacco cessation and prevention resources available to schools. With the rising popularity of electronic cigarettes among youth, school policies must remain updated to safeguard students’ health and well-being.
According to the annual Florida Youth Tobacco Survey, youth e-cigarette use has slowed, but 10.4% of high school students still use e-cigarettes. The U.S. Surgeon General and the Food and Drug Administration have declared youth vaping a national epidemic. Despite legislative changes and FDA actions, brands like Puff Bar and HQD (Cuvie) continue to appeal to children with flavors like “Blue Razz” and bubblegum.
In 2023, the Okaloosa school district launched an anti-vaping campaign. The district introduced educational initiatives, installed vape sensors in school restrooms and provided resources for students and parents. The 2024 Florida Youth Tobacco Survey found that 62.7% of student vape users in Okaloosa County reported using nicotine products, significantly higher than the state average of 51.3%.
The campaign aims to deter vaping on campus, educate students about its risks and ensure compliance with the school board’s policy prohibiting tobacco products, electronic smoking devices and their components on school property. Students violating the policy face disciplinary actions, ranging from participation in the Student Training Program to expulsion, depending on the circumstances.
Local organizations, including Students Working Against Tobacco, will assist the school district in reviewing tobacco-free policies to align with best practices. Efforts focus on protecting people from secondhand smoke exposure, counteracting industry influence, increasing access to cessation resources and implementing supportive, cessation-focused disciplinary measures.
The Florida Department of Health’s Bureau of Tobacco Free Florida offers free cessation tools and services for Floridians 18 and older through the Quit Your Way program, which includes phone and web-based options. Group Quit classes are available in-person or virtually, with free nicotine replacement therapy provided where medically appropriate. NICEVILLE — A line of severe weather is expected to make its way through Northwest Florida on Tuesday night, bringing strong straight-line winds and possible tornadoes.
Here is what you need to know.
According to the National Weather Service in Mobile, Alabama, much of Okaloosa County will see a "slight" risk of severe weather, with an "enhanced" risk north of the Interstate 10 corridor. The strongest weather will likely occur in northern Santa Rosa County and the extreme western edge of Okaloosa, with communities like Holt and Baker seeing effects.
As the line of storms moves through our area, the main threats will be damaging winds of up to 60 miles per hour and tornadoes. Non-thunderstorm winds will also be strong at times, with gusts between 35 and 40 miles per hour.
According to Okaloosa County Public Safety Director Patrick Maddox, those non-thunderstorm winds will come ahead of the main line of storms and possibly be a long-duration event. The main threat is tree limbs falling from weakened trees.
As for precipitation, parts of Okaloosa County can see up to 1.5 inches of rain.
For coastal communities, the risk of rip currents will increase Monday night, with the NWS already issuing a high surf warning and a small craft advisory for Okaloosa County. In Walton County, the small craft advisory is paired with a rip current statement effective until noon Wednesday.
"Confidence on storms forming is high, confidence on overall severity is less-certain, but always prepare as if they were to occur," Maddox wrote.
The NWS said the strongest weather will come into Okaloosa County between 8 p.m. Tuesday and 3 a.m. Wednesday morning.
According to a noon update from NWS, wind gusts in Crestview above 30 miles per hour are expected to begin around 9 a.m. Tuesday morning, with gusts reaching a maximum forecasted strength of 39 miles per hour around 9 p.m.
In Destin, wind gusts are expected to exceed 30 mph about 9 a.m. Tuesday, and those speeds will be sustained until 3 a.m. Wednesday morning.
Toward the end of the update, Maddox urged locals to have "multiple ways" to receive notifications as severe weather rolls through our area.
