ONSLOW COUNTY, NC — UPDATE: A Richlands man is facing charges following a fatal vehicle crash in Onslow County that resulted in the death of his wife and injuries to another driver.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:32 a.m. on Highway 258 near Northwest Bridge Road. According to the State Highway Patrol, 27-year-old Xavier Sharkey of Richlands, was driving a Chevy Malibu southbound when he turned left in front of a northbound van. The van collided with the passenger side of the Malibu, causing it to spin into a ditch, while the van overturned in a separate ditch.

Troopers reported that Sharkey's wife, 23-year-old Amaya Mills, was a passenger in the car and passed away at the scene. Sharkey and the van's driver are both hospitalized with minor injuries. Authorities have stated that Sharkey will face charges of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to yield. The 46-year-old driver of the van is facing a charge of no operator's license.

The severe multi-car collision resulted in traffic delays, prompting authorities to advise drivers to avoid the area. Previously, EMS units responded to all six levels of Emergency Medical Dispatch. To increase response efficiency, Community Paramedics are now automatically dispatched to the lowest level calls as well as fall calls without injury which require only a lift assist.

These lowest level calls typically involve non-emergent conditions such as fevers, sore throats, flu-like symptoms, rashes, or minor injuries. When a Community Paramedic arrives on scene they will conduct a full patient assessment. This helps determine whether an emergency room visit is needed or if the patient can be more appropriately served by other resources, such as an urgent care center or a primary care provider.

Onslow County Emergency Services Director Bradley Kinlaw says these changes will make EMS response more agile and focused. “Not every medical call needs an ambulance. Now when someone calls 911 for something like lift assistance or other minor issues, we can send a Community Paramedic which ensures that ambulances are available for the most serious calls.”

Media are invited to the Onslow County Emergency Operations Center from 10-11AM on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 to meet with a Community Paramedic and see the Quick Response Vehicles they use. The EOC is located at 1180 Commons Drive North in Jacksonville.
